Abstract
Seeks to introduce some of the issues relating to the use of design codes - a system whereby land owners establish the key components of the design of new developments up front and, through legal requirement, then require abidance by any developers subsequently wanting to build in the area covered by the code.

Now defunct, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment was the government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space. They replaced the Royal Fine Art Commission in 1999. In April 2011, the Design Council and CABE joined to become one organisation.
