Abstract
Advisory document which looks at conflict areas, where there is an increased potential for accidents to occur, in depth. A classification system for these areas is introduced and recommendations are made in terms of the luminance of the road surface. Alternative recommendations in terms of illuminance on the road are also provided for applications where it is not practical to use the luminance concept. Recommendations for the lighting of pedestrian areas are given in terms of illuminance and the relatively recent concepts of Small Target Visibility and semi-cylindrical illuminance are discussed.
