Abstract
The primary guidance on energy efficiency in healthcare facilities. It has been produced as a comprehensive guide to all issues relating to the procurement and management of energy in the NHS. Encode is not prescriptive. It draws together best practice guidance so that healthcare organisations can determine a way forward that best suits their situation.

Superseded by HTM 07-02 Part A and Part B (2015). Encode was funded by the Carbon Trust and written by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) as a collaborative project between the Department of Health, NHS Scotland Property and Environment Forum, Welsh Health Estates and Northern Ireland Health Estates.

The Department of Health was committed to improving the quality and convenience of care provided by the NHS and social services. Its work included setting national standards, shaping the direction of health and social care services and promoting healthier living. Publications included Space for Health: Technical Manuals, as well as the Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memorandums, and White Papers. They were renamed to the Department of Health and Social Care. However responsibility for technical guidance was then transferred to NHS Improvement in February 2017 which is now part of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
