Abstract
Gives terminology and definitions, looks at environmental conditions, protection against various hazards such as electrical shock, mechanical, radiation, ignition of flammable anaesthetic mixtures and excessive temperatures.

Renumbered to BS EN 60601-1:1990. Supersedes BS 5724-1:1979 which remains current to allow manufacturers time to implement the new standard. Declared obsolescent and is superseded by BS EN 60601-1:2006 but remains current.
