Abstract

Describes an investigation into the mechanisms which lead to traffic flow breakdown on busy motorways. The investigation involved the collection and analysis of a large database of traffic performance characteristics in an attempt to identify and quantify factors primarily responsible for the breakdown of flow. Suggests possible additional analyses on the existing data set and for new methods of approach for analysing flow breakdown mechanisms.
