Abstract
Examines the issues surrounding the sustainability of newly constructed housing, in comparison with the refurbishment of existing housing, in the context of the government’s Sustainable Communities Plan. Outlines relevant government policy. Considers the two options in relation to maintenance costs, performance of the housing stock, VAT, sustainable construction and life cycle cost analysis. Presents findings from a national survey of industry figures seeking opinion on the drive towards sustainable housing development. Draws conclusions from the evidence.
