Abstract
Describes the benefits of concrete framed buildings, discussing whole life value, cost and programme, speed of construction, frame and foundation costs, performance in use, co-ordination and environmental aspects such as thermal mass. Advises early specialist contractor involvement will help to reduce costs. Compares various structural forms in terms of lead in times and speed of construction, span and depth of construction data and then examines each in depth. Highlights innovations in concrete mixes, looking at the benefits of high performance concretes, flowing concretes and self-compacting concretes. Examines emerging construction methods, which offer fast and efficient systems that can be used in high rise structures, also looks at slipform construction, jump form construction, tunnel form construction, high rise construction.
