Abstract
Supports and amplifies the planning circular for England on the protection of World Heritage Sites, which gives advice on the level of protection and management needed for World Heritage Sites, and draws attention to recent legislative measures designed to enhance the protection of these sites. Explains what World Heritage Sites are in international and national contexts, the role of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and World Heritage Centre and the role of the UK Government. Also sets out the importance of the planning system and sustainable community strategies in protecting and sustaining World Heritage Sites. In addition, it describes the function of World Heritage Site Management Plans and the methods used to prepare them.
