Abstract
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) are concerned with protection against risks from fire, explosion and similar events arising from dangerous substances used or present in the workplace. They set minimum requirements for the protection of workers from fire and explosion risks related to dangerous substances and potentially explosive atmospheres. The Code of Practice provides practical advice on what employers need to do to meet the requirements of regulations 5 and 6 of DSEAR (on assessment and control) with regard to control and mitigation measures for activities involving dangerous substances. In particular, it details the requirements of ventilation, ignition avoidance and adequate separation to prevent or mitigate the risks of fire and explosion.
