Abstract
Relates to the design of acute in-patient units in England, for adults aged 18 years and upwards. Aims to inform the planning and design of in-patient facilities that are fit for purpose, provide value for money and support the delivery of key service objectives and policy drivers.

Published 20 March 2013. Supersedes HBN 35 Part 1 ‘The acute unit’ (1996) which was also superseded by Space for Health: Clinical Services ‘Adult acute mental health units: Policy and service context manual’ and ‘Adult acute mental health units: Planning and design manual’ (2012). Department of Health is now known as the Department of Health and Social Care.

Its work included setting national standards, shaping the direction of health and social care services and promoting healthier living. Publications included Space for Health: Technical Manuals, as well as the Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memorandums, and White Papers. They were renamed to the Department of Health and Social Care. However responsibility for technical guidance was then transferred to NHS Improvement in February 2017 which is now part of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
