Abstract
Covers all types of units which provide care for neonates who need more than the routine care provided in maternity units. Includes cot space provision for special care, high dependency care and intensive care, and the associated clinical and non-clinical support facilities, including facilities for families.

Supersedes Space for Health: Clinical Services 'Neonatal units: Planning and design manual' and 'Neonatal units: Policy and service context manual' (2011), which replaced HBN 21 Maternity department (1996). Department of Health is now known as the Department of Health and Social Care.

Its work included setting national standards, shaping the direction of health and social care services and promoting healthier living. Publications included Space for Health: Technical Manuals, as well as the Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memorandums, and White Papers. They were renamed to the Department of Health and Social Care. However responsibility for technical guidance was then transferred to NHS Improvement in February 2017 which is now part of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
