Abstract
Produced as a guide to the design principles and issues that apply to all adult acute in-patient healthcare facilities (although the standards and principles it advocates may be appropriate to follow in all locations where healthcare is provided). This document provides an overview of general design principles.
Document History
Supersedes HBN 00-01 'General design guidance for healthcare buildings' (updated 31 march 2014). Published 20 March 2013. Updated to include new version design guidance for healthcare buildings 31 March 2014. Updated 3 June 2014 - added section on Common Minimum Standards. HBN 00-01 should be read in conjunction with HBN 00-09 'Infection control in the built environment'. Department of Health is now known as the Department of Health and Social Care.

The Department of Health was committed to improving the quality and convenience of care provided by the NHS and social services. Its work included setting national standards, shaping the direction of health and social care services and promoting healthier living. Publications included Space for Health: Technical Manuals, as well as the Health Building Notes, Health Technical Memorandums, and White Papers. They were renamed to the Department of Health and Social Care. However responsibility for technical guidance was then transferred to NHS Improvement in February 2017 which is now part of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
