Abstract
The world’s population is ageing faster than it ever has before. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 2015 and 2050 the number of people that are 60 years or older will go from 900 million to 2 billion. At the same time, our older population isn’t significantly healthier than their parents were. This unprecedented rate of increase – from 12% to 22% – in such a short space of time has wide-ranging implications for our society – from how to integrate older workers in to our business to how to allow them continued independence for as long as possible. In this article, we briefly cover some statistics, look at ageing from a design and housing standpoint, and briefly cover a few ideas about designing for dementia.
