Advisory Desk Note 536 In-plane member buckling lengths for portal frames

Publication Year

2025

Document Status

Abstract

This SCI Advisory Note (AD 536) addresses confusion around in-plane buckling lengths for members in portal frames, particularly when using general structural analysis software that requires input of buckling lengths in both axes. It reaffirms that in-plane verification of portal frame members is achieved by checking the overall frame stability and, if necessary, applying second-order analysis; individual member in-plane buckling lengths are not required. The note advises designers to disregard outdated guidance from SCI publication P397 and SN03la, which do not reflect typical UK pitched roof portal frame practice. It refers designers to SCI P399 for accurate Eurocode-based procedures.
