Advisory Desk Note 548 High shear regions for large web openings as defined in SCI P355

Abstract

This Advisory Desk note clarifies the definition of "high shear" regions in the context of large web openings in composite beams, as outlined in SCI publication P355. According to P355, a high shear region is defined where the design shear force exceeds half the maximum design shear force acting on the beam. This classification influences the geometric limits for web openings, with stricter requirements applied in high shear zones. Table 2.1 of P355 provides practical limits for opening dimensions and web-post widths, derived from typical composite beam designs.
