Abstract
Lighting for industry facilitates quick, accurate work, contributes to the safety of those carrying out that work and provides a pleasant and healthy visual environment. The lighting system provided must meet these objectives adequately, often in operating conditions which are far from ideal. This lighting guide considers a wide range of industrial situations and offers both general and specific guidance on how these objectives may best be achieved. General aspects of lighting and the problems particular to lighting in industry are considered first. The guide then assesses in detail the lighting requirements of 19 major industries and provides recommendations on service illuminances and glare indices for the various tasks undertaken in each of the industries considered. The industrial environment is not limited to interior spaces; loading bays, railway yards, dockyards, quays, jetties and other outside areas are addressed fully. Emergency and security lighting are dealt with in detail.
