DMRB Volume 3 Section 3 Part 1 (BA 30/94) Highway structures: Inspection and maintenance. Repair. Strengthening of concrete highway structures using externally bonded plates (Withdrawn)

Publication Year

1994

Document Status

Withdrawn

Abstract

Refers to the technique of strengthening concrete highway structures by external plate bonding. The technique of bonding steel plates to concrete bridges using epoxy adhesives has been used on a number of trunk road structures to enhance their load carrying capacity. The viability of this technique for a particular structure should be considered carefully due to its sensitivity to standards of workmanship and need for regular in-service inspection. Economical evaluation should be carried out in order to compare this technique with other methods of strengthening. The effect of bonding a plate to the tension face of a reinforced concrete section is to increase the depth from the compression face to the neutral axis and the area of effective reinforcement, thus, increasing the moment of resistance of the section. The operation is undertaken without additional support to the member.
