Good Building Guide 19 Building reinforced, diaphragm and wide plan free-standing walls
Publication Year
1994
Document Status

Abstract
Presents rule of thumb guidance for stable construction of a range of common brick or blockwork wall types. Separate values for wall height and foundation width are given for increasing levels of exposure across the UK and solutions can be compared with complementary advice published for simple plan unreinforced walls. The Guide includes notes on materials selection and good construction practice. The need for good supervision is stress, particularly with reinforced walls, where a number of quite different building operations are involved which require careful co-ordination and execution. The advice in this guide allows walls to be built up to a height of 2. 5 m.
