Abstract
Illuminance records from Kew and Bracknell for the 10-year period 1964-73 have been analysed to produce accurate and up-to-date figures of daylight availability. Graphs and tables are provided of the percentages of various working years, months and hours for which given illuminances occur and are exceeded. Information is supplied for both horizontal diffuse and horizontal total illuminances. Limited information on the occurrence of total illuminance at five other locations in the UK is also given. The information is intended to help designers to estimate more accurately than previously possible the necessary and likely hours of use of artificial lighting in buildings. The data also provide an improved basis for calculating possible energy savings from the photoelectric control of artificial lighting installations.
