Abstract
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is any means of determining the properties of a material without causing significant changes to those properties. The techniques and equipment available to the timber inspector today range from simple visual inspection through to techniques such as radar and thermography. Each has a varying level of development in the field of NDT generally and its application to timber in particular. This WI Sheet provides an introduction to NDT of timber in buildings and other structures for architects, engineers, surveyors and building inspectors. It categorises the techniques with their capabilities and limitations. Potential future developments are outlined.
