Newcastle Helix is based on the former Scottish & Newcastle Brewery in Newcastle, and was delivered by Newcastle Science City in conjunction with partners Newcastle University, Newcastle City Council and Legal and General.
The 24-acre site is an exemplar in sustainable urban development, attracting leading edge science and technology organisations to a community which encompasses a variety of educational, business, residential and leisure uses. With 20 different building plots and six residential plots, it is estimated to have generated 4000 jobs in the local area.
Newcastle Laboratory, a 10,000 sq.m ‘living lab’ was the first independent Newcastle City Council building at Science Central. As well as the commercial laboratory space, it also provides office accommodation for companies in the science industry.
The building consists of two wings, accessed via a central core. The lower ground floor contains the entrance and reception area, as well as meeting spaces and ancillary accommodation. The level above provides office accommodation, centralised meeting spaces and a social hub. The four levels above this are designated for laboratory and office use with the seventh storey dedicated to housing internal and external plant and tenant amenities.
