NBS has teamed up with 10 of their customers who have designed and engineered some of the best modern buildings in the region to create an interactive wall using augmented reality technology.
The 10 landmarks will be plotted on a map of the region, and with the use of an iPad each building will be brought to life in a 3D model that visitors will be able to move around and view the project in 360 degrees, like never before.
This will all be part of NBS’s “Future Buildings” exhibition for the Great Exhibition of the North which will be at its headquarters in The Old Post Office in the City centre, on the innovation walking trail.
The NBS exhibition includes JDDK who designed The Sill in Northumberland, Ryder who are creating Tombola Campus Sunderland, ADP who were involved in the refurbishment of Spanish City in Whitley Bay and Xsite who are working on the North East Futures UTC, Newcastle, as well as six others.
The “Future Buildings” exhibition will allow visitors to step inside the award-winning Old Post Office, exploring the old and new as they are taken on a journey through time. The interactive exhibition will start with the transformation of the Grade II listed building and end with a look at how our future buildings will take shape.
At NBS we work with architects and engineers all over the world - but we don’t have to travel that far to find examples of organisations who are leading the way with new technologies
Richard Waterhouse, CEO
NBS engaged with local agency Coffee Design to create the augmented reality experience for the future part of its exhibition. As augmented reality is being used more and more within the built environment, NBS were keen to showcase this technology.
NBS CEO, Richard Waterhouse said, “At NBS, we work with architects and engineers all over the world, but we don’t have to travel that far to find examples of organisations who are leading the way with new technologies like Building Information Modelling (BIM). Newly-established firms across the region sit alongside those with 30, 40 and 50+ years’ experience working on all conceivable kinds of projects.
“We can’t mention every single North East practice and project, but you only have to explore the work of teams at FaulknerBrowns, Ryder, JDDK and Space Architects to get a taste for the quality, passion and experience of the regions architectural design community.
“We have chosen 10 of many who we think showcase some of the best architecture and engineering in the North to create the best augmented reality wall for our visitors. It really will be an exciting 12 weeks for everyone involved.”
The NBS exhibition was developed to have a bigger impact and excite people about the future of the built environment by focusing on their shared vision for the future of construction.
NBS will be part of The Great Exhibition of the North’s Innovation Trail which will run from 22 June until 9 September 2018.
NOTE TO EDITORS
ABOUT NBS: NBS is committed to offering distinctive, innovative specification and information solutions to construction industry professionals and are proud to be leading the construction industry in its digital evolution. Our origins lie in the National Building Specification and for over 40 years we have developed and produced NBS products which support the built environment. Our NBS specification products cover construction, engineering services and landscape design.
More recently we have developed an integrated Building Information Modelling (BIM) platform that has been designed to support global design and construction. It currently has four major components:
- NBS BIM Toolkit: BIM execution plan, roles and responsibilities.
- NBS Create: BIM specification and knowledge platform.
- NBS National BIM Library: BIM object library, generic and actual.
- Construction Information Service (CIS): Standards and regulations.
CIS is delivered via a joint venture with IHS Markit. This relationship has successfully prospered for many years.
Our products are recognised as being individually effective in their own right, but via the linking of the data, classification and integration, the true power comes through these connections across the NBS BIM platform. Combining world leading technology with expert knowledge, NBS is trusted to help construction industry professionals make the best project decisions.
