Future Buildings at NBS is part of the Get North Innovation Trail. We take visitors on a journey through time and explore the building innovations that have transformed the world around us. We’re open seven days a week from 10am till 6pm, so come and visit us!
What's the Future Buildings exhibition all about?
Travel through time and discover the building innovations that have transformed the world around us.
We explore the past and uncover a history of a city you see every day. We show you how emerging technologies have transformed an old building like the Old Post Office - our renovation was completed in 2016 and cost £5.2 million!
We showcase the present with a 3D printed model of the Old Post Office, take a tour of the Old Post Office via a 3D model and see 11 iconic landmarks from around the North East come to life with Augmented Reality technology.
We design the future, giving visitors a chance to build their home of the future and explore how the Internet of Things is connecting our Future Buildings.
We hope the exhibition will excite people about the future of the built environment.

North East showcase
NBS teamed up with 10 local practices to showcase their chosen North East projects as part of our exhibition. Plotted on a map of the region, visitors can grab an iPad and watch how the buildings are brought to life using augmented reality technology, allowing you to move around and get a 360 degree view.
You can read more about each of the buildings featured and the architects involved in their creation on our dedicated North East Showcase page.

Internet of Things
The Internet of Things is set to put the future of construction in our very own homes, transforming the way we live. 'Smart' devices such as thermostats, light bulbs and even the locks to our front doors are increasingly being controlled by our mobile phones. Explore this concept more in the 'future' section of our exhibition.
