Sustainability is now a key consideration for architects, specifiers and project managers, who must meet targets to reduce carbon emissions and minimise the impact of construction works on the environment.
It’s no longer enough to simply opt for products that have lower emissions. Specifiers should choose to work with manufacturers committed to reducing environmental impact across the project’s entire lifecycle.
One way to achieve that is by using recycled materials – though traditionally, this has been impaired by doubts over quality or performance. However, as demonstrated by d line, a Danish manufacturer, quality materials can be reused in a project to save enormous amounts of CO2e and create more eco-friendly projects for the entirety of the building’s life.
Introducing the industry’s first circular system
Promising to extend the life of products for up to 100 years, d line’s Rehandle® system is an innovative approach to sustainable project design. The manufacturer will take in original product and then fix, replace, and brush them to work as good as new – saving as much as 90% in Co2e compared to manufacturing a new product from scratch.
To support an ethos of timeless design, d line challenges you to Re-handle® the same product up to four times. With each Re-handle®, the 20-year product warranty period is renewed, securing up to 100 years of use.
It’s cost-efficient too, as a Re-handled product is 60% cheaper than a newly produced item – making the choice both environmentally and economically effective.
In action: how Re-handle® resulted in a more eco-friendly property conversion
When the old office of SU Styrelsen (Public Administration for The Danish Students' Grants and Loans Scheme) was to be repurposed as student accommodation, the focus was placed on reusing and upcycling the building’s original elements to optimise its environmental impact.
Many of the original Knud Holscher lever handles produced by d line were still as enduring as when first specified. So naturally, it made sense for them to be fitted to the new abodes as a way to repurpose, reuse and avoid unnecessary waste.
Contractor Einar Kornerup and a locksmith dismounted and stored the existing lever handles during construction work, and remounted all lever handles with new screws and PVC bushes so that they could live in the spaces they occupy forever.
From the sourcing of non-corrosive high-quality AISI316 stainless steel to the unique d line ball-bearing system of 21 balls that roll against each other behind its lever roses, d line’s lever handles will stand the test of time. In their technical design, the levers are designed for constant use, swift and easy installation as well as low maintenance. They are certified and conform to the highest standards of safety and quality.
All brands say they produce quality, but few test it. The d line team has proven their craftsmanship through testing, demonstrating each handle can endure 10 million uses. With an average of 20 uses per day, a typical d line handle promises a lifespan of 1370 years. The team is confident about their reused lever handles because, when produced correctly, they will last a lifetime.
Designed to never become waste
Long before global warming became an issue for most construction brands, d line committed to manufacturing products which are timeless in design and enduring in their strength, which meant they wouldn’t need to be bought for a purpose more than once. It is this uncompromising approach to design and complete supply chain control that makes Re-handle® the most revolutionary circular system in their operating industry.
Reuse in order to reduce
Quantify your eco-friendly choices when you choose d line. New products produce sizeable CO2 emissions, so by choosing to Re-handle® d line products instead of buying new, you’ll reduce between 54-91% of the product’s carbon footprint, depending on the model.
Knowing how much carbon you can help save is made possible through d line’s tracking of each product’s Global Warming Potential (CO2 emission) across its entire life cycle. These measurements are based on fully documented, internationally recognised Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs executed and verified by a third party).
Choose d line’s Re-handle system to enjoy eco-friendly, timelessly-styled bathroom accessories and hardware that promise lifecycles of more than 100 years. Visit their website and view the products on NBS Source to learn more.
